Assembling braided stainless lines with hose ends can be a tiring experience. It takes a lot of practice and wasted hose ends, unless you have a KOULtool™.

From the KOULtools™ Website:

“KOULtools™ are simple to use and will save time and fingers from the frayed ends of a braided hose .

After choosing the correct “KOULtool™” for your fittings socket size, simply place the socket and adaptor ( if required ) into the “KOULtools™” and clamp it into a vise.

Lube the funnel entrance and twist the hose into the socket.

Show Winning 1959 Chevy 3100 Apache Fleetside

0

1959 Chevy Apache FrontThis is a very fine 1959 Apache Fleetside, with a frame off restoration completed in 2005. John from Arkansas says it’s, “A joy to drive and rides beautifully. It shows well and always gets a lot of admirers.”

John stated with a rust free body. He then stripped the body to bare metal, prepped the metal and shot victory red paint. All the chrome is in great condition. The wood bed of the truck was completely restored with new red oak and stainless runners. For a cleaner look, tailgate brackets and chains were shaved.

Under the hood is a 300 HP GM 350 Crate Motor with a new Holley Street Avenger carb, HEI ignition, Optima battery and Painless Wiring harness. It is kept running cool by a new aluminum Griffin radiator (600 hp rated), 2400 cfm electric pull fan and stainless overflow tank. It has a GM serpentine belt system, Old Air A/C system with a GM compressor, power steering, power brakes (front disc / rear drum) and all new brake and fuel lines. The engine is connected to a TH350 transmission. The power is transferred to the  rear wheels by a 1974 Nova 10 bolt rear end. The chassis features an 87 half ton front suspension with heavy duty sway bar. Under the bed is an 18 gallon aluminum fuel cell.

The truck rides on custom rally wheels from Stockton Wheel with classic moon center caps w/ embossed Chevy bowtie. The interior metal is red to match the exterior. A GM tilt steering column with a 90’s Chevy truck steering wheel was installed. The dash board features a modern analog VDO instrument cluster with a brushed billet aluminum face plate and a Sony AM/FM/CD stereo system that sounds great.

We love it! Nice Work John!

Bully Dog Premium Intakes Released

0

March 24, 2012 – Bully Dog’s team of engineers have successfully created new, fully-enclosed Rapid Flow cold air intake (RFI) systems for both the 2011 Ford F150 3.5L Eco Boost (part number 51202) and 2003-2007 Dodge Ram 5.9L Cummins (part number 52102) trucks. These revolutionary systems are designed to replace the stock air intake, air filter, and tube assembly on the vehicle making these intakes “stage 2”, which is not available from anyone else for the 2011 EcoBoost F-150. Features of the new Bully Dog RFI include a high-flow, 8-layer cotton gauze air filter that improves airflow by 25% over stock models and filters over 99% of particulates. The fully enclosed system protects the filter from radiant engine heat ensuring that only cold air from outside the vehicle makes it into the air intake stream.

3.5L EcoBoost: Proven Results
Dyno testing reports the new Bully Dog RFI provides power gains of 25.4 horsepower and 8.7 lbs.ft of torque over the OEM stock air intake system on a 2011 Ford F-150 3.5L Eco Boost.

Internally or Externally Balanced Engine?

Exterior Balanced Damper
Exterior Balanced Damper - Noticeable Weight Added

How do you know if your engine is internally or externally balanced? Externally balanced engines have a noticeable weight on both the damper (also called a harmonic balancer) and the flywheel/flexplate. Internally balanced engines do not rely on any counterweight on the damper (harmonic balancer) or flywheel/flexplate.

Wheel of the Week – Rocket Booster 6

Rocket Booster 6 WheelsRocket Racing Wheels is launching a new wheel that will be available in May of 2012. What makes the wheel unique is the focus on classic trucks and their massive fender openings. This wheel was made for 6 x 5-1/2″ lug hubs that some classic Chevy and GMC trucks have. You can also get it in a 5 on 5-1/2″ bolt pattern for the Ford hubs. Rocket Booster 6 wheels are 20″ x 9″ only allowing them to fill your fender wells. For you newer Ford guys, a 5 x 135 mm and 6 x 135 mm wheel is available.

From Rocket Racing Wheels:

Rocket Racing Wheels changes the game by unveiling the first 6-lug, five-spoke, classic style truck wheel. The all-new, Rocket Booster 6, mimics the sleek, hot rod design of the original Rocket Booster, but with a 6-lug mounting application. Booster 6 features a reverse mount soft lip outer that provides a longer spoke and maximizes the wheel window. Additionally, Ford Truck enthusiasts can cruise in hot rod style with the option of the 5×5 1/2 bolt pattern application.

The Booster 6 will be available May 2012 in 20″ size and is purpose built to deliver big style and performance for 6-lug classic and late model trucks and SUVs at very affordable prices. The Booster 6 was beefed up for towing capacity and will be load rated at 2,650 pounds per wheel. The Booster 6 is precision-crafted from A356 aluminum and designed and tested to meet or exceed U.S.D.O.T. requirements and SAE standards. Booster 6 quality finishes will include our durable high-luster Chrome and our easy to maintain classic Hyper Shot paint. To complete the look, each wheel is topped off with a vintage-style domed aluminum center cap.

How Much Carburetor Do You Need?

0

Here’s a simple formula that most speed shops use to size a basic carburetor to an engine.

Carburetor CFM = (Engine RPM x Engine Cubic Inches)/3,456

Let’s take a 350 ci engine that we will run about 5,000 RPM at most.

Carburetor CFM = (5,000 x 350)/3,456 = 506 CFM –> A 500 CFM carb would work for this engine.

Note: Engine RPM should be the top RPM your engine will reach. Be reasonable with the number. Choosing 8,000 RPM in the formula will change the Carburetor CFM versus 5,000 RPM. When you get odd numbers you just have to find the carburetor that is close to the number you come up with.

The monkey wrench in using this equation is volumetric efficiency. Volumetric Efficiency is the efficiency that an engine can move the air/fuel mixture into the combustion chamber shown as a percentage. The better your engine moves fuel and air, the more power you can make because the engine can burn more air and fuel. Some engines may only have a 75% volumetric efficiency. If that’s the case, your 500 CFM carb in our example only needs to be 375. We got this number by multiplying the CFM number we got from our formula by the volumetric efficiency (.75). If your engine’s volumetric efficiency is 90%, the 500 CFM carb technically only needs to be a 450 CFM carb. 450 CFM is much closer to 500 than our 375 we got with 75% efficiency. The closer your engine is to 100% volumetric efficiency, the more accurate the basic formula is.

Blowers usually increase volumetric efficiency over 100%. You can see how a blown engine with a 125% volumetric efficiency would need a higher CFM carburetor(s) versus the same engine with no blower. The basic formula above may work for a blower motor. These situations are more complex. You should ask your blower manufacturer or speed shop for their recommendations.

There are some things you can do to increase your engines volumetric efficiency: Porting and polishing heads, for example, can increase Volumetric Efficiency. Blowers as mentioned above also help.
